Welcome to BOINC Sentinels project

BOINC is an open source project for volunteer computing/distributed computing. This project is meant to be an incubation project to explore different user interfaces and data models for displaying data about a BOINC client.

A quick history lesson is in order, the present day BOINC Manager with its tabbed interface has its roots in the original MFC management interface developed initially for Windows. Functionality for the core client and the manager existed with in the same program. There was no GUI RPCs so you could not control one BOINC client from another.

In 2004, when we decided to split the core client functionality and manager functionality into two separate components and make the manager cross-platform by way of wxWidgets, we kept the same user interface design to speed up the porting efforts. This allowed us to add in a piece of functionality so people could control multiple clients from the manager.

In 2006, with the help of World Community Grid we introduced the simple user interface. While it was a big improvement over the advanced user interface for people who were new to BOINC, it was a step back for people with disabilities.

The goals of the next user interface for BOINC should be:

  • Easy to use
  • Easy to understand
  • Multi-threaded
  • Unicode enabled
  • Manage one or more BOINC clients
